“Accident is the greatest of all inventors,” – Mark Twain
Americans 45 is a down-to-earth, on-the-road project I created with writer Ricardo Henriques. Over the course of one month, we set out on a journey across the United States to meet strangers and collect portraits of American citizens on the eve of the historic election of the 45th President.
With the eyes of an outsider, curious, almost anthropological, our goal was to understand not just the complex and often puzzling American electoral system, but above all, to listen to everyday people. Without filters. Beyond the clichés.
We started in Los Angeles and headed east, crossing 15 states, and arrived in Washington D.C. on Election Day. Throughout the journey, we documented the experience on the website www.americans45.com, where we published the photographs and interviews as the trip unfolded.
Revista Sábado as our media partner and led to the exhibition Accident is the Greatest of All Inventors, shown at the Auditorium Municipal Augusto Cabrita. The exhibition was nominated for the 2018 Photography Prize of the Portuguese Society of Authors.
