Todos os anos colaboramos criativamente no desenvolvimento de duas grandes campanhas: a de incentivo à consignação do IRS e a de Natal, dedicada aos presentes solidários Helpo. O meu pai faria hoje 80 anos. O aniversário dele O meu pai faria hoje 80 anos. O aniversário dele era no mesmo dia do sogro, o meu avô Zé. Quando os netos ainda eram miúdos, encontrávamo-nos sempre neste dia em Estremoz, na casa dos meus avós, no Monte da Prates. Cinco irmãos, cada um com os seus dois filhos. Juntavam-se também sogros de vários lados e os meus avós paternos, que o meu pai ia buscar a Santo Amaro. Quando o tempo ajudava, o almoço era na rua, mesa grande, montada debaixo da figueira a que tantas vezes subi. O dia 1 de novembro era também dia da Feira dos Santos, em Borba. Depois do almoço, era viagem obrigatória. Dava-se a volta, comiam-se farturas e ouviam-se as anedotas nas cassetes do Cantinflas. Ao fim da tarde, cada um seguia o seu caminho: uns para Lisboa, outros para Alenquer, Benavila, Benavente ou Almada. Parece outra vida. E foi mesmo. Parabéns Pai. Parabéns Avô Zé.

Photographed at the Ginásio de Boxe do Lisboa Fut Photographed at the Ginásio de Boxe do Lisboa Futebol Clube in Alcântara, one of Lisbon’s small boxing clubs, this series captures the raw energy and quiet discipline of the space. Under coach Paulo Seco’s guidance, nationally renowned boxers such as Nuno Lagarto, Pedro Matos, and Ariana Santos share the ring with young and older fighters from all walks of life, sparring and training side by side. I first heard about Paulo’s work through a friend, Marco Dias, who also trained there. He told me about the remarkable impact Paulo was having in one of Lisbon’s most troubled neighbourhoods. To this day, his academy helps kids find their way out of the difficult and dangerous labyrinths of the former Casal Ventoso. This project ended up becoming the story of my first exhibition, fifteen years ago, when these photographs were shown at Loja das Maquetas in Lisbon, thanks to the invitation of Carla, Conceição, and Nuno. https://luismileu.com/photography/shadow-dancers/
I’ve been organizing my projects and portraits o I’ve been organizing my projects and portraits on my website, and soon I’ll have a section dedicated to India. The portraits taken during train journeys will be one of the most interesting parts. After missing our train between Tundla and Varanasi, our only option was to travel in Sleeper Class, even though our ticket was for Second AC. In India, trains range from air-conditioned first classes with berths and privacy to more crowded and basic options. Most foreign travelers avoid Sleeper Class, as it can be intense and far outside one’s comfort zone. We squeezed our way into the carriage, backpacks in the air, struggling to find space. For the first two hours, we stood with nowhere to put down our bags, only our feet. The floor was covered with people sleeping, a tangle of legs and torsos. It was only thanks to the generosity of fellow passengers that, after three hours, we finally managed to find the corner of a bunk to sit on. By the following morning, as people slowly got off, we finally found a bit of space to rest. At daybreak, I grabbed my camera and wandered through the carriages, photographing our neighbors. This portrait is of a man shaving at the shared water basin. We never exchanged a single word, but we did exchange glances, and he responded with a quiet, unmistakable nod of consent when he saw the camera.

Two days in Naples. It was my first time in this Two days in Naples. It was my first time in this city. For anyone who’s been to Buenos Aires or Havana, there’s something familiar here, the frenzy, the faded paint, but above all, the kind of everyday street life Lisbon once had but gradually lost. The streets are its pulse, alive in ways you can almost touch, in the scent of pizza, the rush of motorbikes, the music of a dialect so fierce it feels like another Italy. And it is. And then there’s Maradona. In Buenos Aires he’s a god, but in Naples he’s a devoted saint, competing with San Gennaro. #naples
While observing the streets, I realize how each ci While observing the streets, I realize how each city carries its own sentimental geography. In cultures as distinct as those portrayed in Tokyo, Marrakech, and Bologna, the idea of community is not a given, but a fragile construction that constantly renews itself. In the urban spaces I photograph, I see community as an ongoing rehearsal, a laboratory where forms of coexistence and acceptance are tested. It does not manifest only in grand gestures, but above all in the small rituals of daily life: the glances, the paths, the silence.
